{"id":266488,"date":"2025-08-12T08:36:39","date_gmt":"2025-08-12T06:36:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/mthathaexpress\/jellyfish-invasion-forces-shutdown-of-frances-largest-nuclear-power-station\/"},"modified":"2025-08-12T08:45:45","modified_gmt":"2025-08-12T06:45:45","slug":"jellyfish-invasion-forces-shutdown-of-frances-largest-nuclear-power-station","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/novanews.co.za\/mthathaexpress\/jellyfish-invasion-forces-shutdown-of-frances-largest-nuclear-power-station\/","title":{"rendered":"Jellyfish invasion forces shutdown of France\u2019s largest nuclear power station"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>LILLE, FRANCE<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 A massive swarm of jellyfish forced the complete shutdown of Western Europe&#8217;s largest nuclear power station on Monday, highlighting the unexpected ways climate change is affecting critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gravelines nuclear facility in northern France was brought to a standstill after jellyfish clogged the pumps used to cool its reactors, energy giant EDF announced yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Four of the plant&#8217;s six reactors automatically shut down when the marine creatures blocked filter drums at the pumping stations, whilst the remaining two units were already offline for scheduled maintenance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These shutdowns are the result of the massive and unpredictable presence of jellyfish in the filter drums of the pumping stations,&#8221; EDF said in a statement on its website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company was quick to reassure the public that the automatic safety measures &#8220;had no impact on the safety of the facilities, the safety of personnel, or the environment.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-swift-response-expected\">Swift response expected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Engineering teams were conducting thorough inspections on Monday evening, with EDF expressing confidence that production could resume safely by Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;There is no risk of a power shortage,&#8221; the energy provider emphasised, noting that alternative sources including solar power remained fully operational to meet demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Gravelines site, located on France&#8217;s northern coast, houses six reactors capable of generating 900 megawatts each. The facility is also earmarked for expansion, with two next-generation reactors scheduled for completion by 2040, each boasting a capacity of 1 600 megawatts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-rare-but-recurring-problem\">Rare but recurring problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Whilst jellyfish-induced shutdowns remain uncommon, this is not an unprecedented occurrence. EDF described such incidents as &#8220;quite rare,&#8221; noting that the last similar disruption to their operations occurred in the 1990s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, nuclear facilities worldwide have occasionally fallen victim to jellyfish invasions.
