It’s official – winter has arrived swiftly, bringing with it darker mornings and early sunsets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Coupled with load shedding and malfunctioning street lights, the roads can be especially hazardous for motorists travelling to and from work. That’s why now is the perfect time to check that your vehicle’s lights are fully operational, says Dewald Ranft, Chairman of the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a proud association of the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI).\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
“Poor visibility is a major contributor to road accidents during winter. Many of these could be avoided if all vehicle lights were functioning properly and used correctly,” says Ranft.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The good news is that replacing faulty lights is quick and affordable. “Your vehicle lights are critical \u2013 they help you see the road ahead and, more importantly, ensure you are visible to others. A simple bulb failure can compromise your safety and that of others on the road,” he warns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ranft recommends a quick and easy check with someone’s assistance:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Turn on your headlights, then test brights and dims.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Check all indicators \u2013 front, side mirrors, and rear.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Test rear driving lights.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Press the brake pedal to confirm both brake lights work.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u2022 Shift into reverse to check reverse lights and number plate light.\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n “If any lights aren’t working, take your car to an accredited MIWA workshop. Most bulb replacements are done while you wait,” he advises. “Ask your mechanic about bulb quality too \u2013 brighter or longer-lasting options may be worth the investment if you regularly drive in dark conditions.”\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ranft also stresses that good lighting habits matter. “Indicators aren’t optional, and neither are headlights when visibility is poor \u2013 especially during load shedding when traffic lights are out. Responsible driving saves lives.
