Phelisa Nogingxana from Maqhinebeni location in Mthatha, who used to work as a book seller, has come up with a plan to minimise the number of youth who roam around the streets in her area.
She confirmed that she is a community builder and had started a centre, called Maqhinebeni Youth Development, with the aim of helping young people.
“I have done this for the past eight years. I look after children, aged five to 17, and youth, during weekends and holidays. We have an informal library where they give reading sessions as per their grades,” said Nogingxana.
She said that their library is not big at the moment but it does make a difference.
“The books that we are using are relevant for Grade R to Grade 12. We lend books to those who are doing Grade 12 so that they can use them in their homes. They then bring the books back at the end of the year.”
She confirmed that some of the youth who benefited from this initiative have since found employment.
Nogingxana said she is happy because her dream is coming true.
She added that they will host an event called Masibuyeleni Embo Cultural and Youth event on December 16.
