ONE of the oldest Mthatha rugby teams, Wallabies, are now gearing up for the Premier League playoffs.
The Premier League playoffs will be held on November 9 and 10 in Mthatha.
Wallabies were crowned champions of the OR Tambo Rugby Clubs Federation after finishing in the first position.
Wallabies team manager, Godfrey Mtitshana said, “We have gained momentum from the 2023 league standings as we came second overall and won silver. This year, we became the O.R. Tambo Rugby Clubs Federation champions and have won gold medals. Now we are preparing for playoffs to be promoted into the Premier League, which is part of the Border Rugby Federation, and with that, we will be travelling to East London, Stutterheim, Queenstown, and Ngcele area in Maclear.”
Wallabies was founded in 1953 in Mthatha and as such is the Transkei and Border Rugby direct affiliate as well as the rugby heritage living symbol in the area. The Wallabies club president is Bekizitha Jekubeni.
Mtitshana added, “This club is for all rugby enthusiasts and anyone who would like to make a change in our communities; we welcome any and all players over the age of 18 years.
“We strive to promote more sports and less youth in spots (shebeens) using substances.”
“We aspire to be in the Premier League next year, and as such, the expenses will be more due to additional travelling costs, as well as fruit and refreshments costs.”
“In order to continue to make this rewarding experience a reality for our youth, we are reaching out to local businesses, family, and friends and offering the opportunity to help by becoming a team or club sponsor. Any sponsorship level you select will be greatly appreciated.”
“We request assistance with a full rugby kit, first aid, transportation, and warm-up shirts. For the team, your sponsorship will earn you the title of proud team sponsor with a photo of the team to display on your office wall and your business logo on our shirts, which will add a valuable marketing tool as well,” said Mtitshana.
Wallabies coaches include: Caswell Dosini, Buyani Skade, Odwa Vakubi, Rujean Davids, and Roland Venter. For sponsorships, contact the Wallabies at godfreymtitshana@gmail.com
