THE Branch Secretary for the South African Democratic Teachers Union (SADTU), Phikolomzi Kahla, confirmed that Circuit 8 in Libode had hosted an awareness programme aimed at preparing teachers as learners approach their final exams.
Kahla mentioned that they have identified numerous issues in schools, including ongoing conflicts among some teachers.
“These problems are not only happening in schools but also in their homes. With this programme, we are promoting unity among the teachers. Even principals and school clerks participated,” Kahla stated.
He added that conflicts within some schools were causing stress, and this initiative was designed to help relieve it. The programme included an aerobics session to encourage teamwork among colleagues.
“We want them to understand the importance of exercise. Sometimes, they should leave their vehicles at home and take a walk. This will set an example for future generations. This is the first time we’ve hosted this event, and we hope it becomes a regular branch programme. We aim to roll it out across all five circuits,” Kahla said.
Kahla also confirmed that Fundile Gade, the MEC for the Department of Education in the Eastern Cape, has set a target of 85% for matric results. However, the Libode branch is aiming for 90% in the 2024 matric results.
According to Kahla, schools like Smuts Ngonyama Senior Secondary School and Bhekizulu Senior Secondary School are involved in incubating learners.
“Even schools not involved in this incubation process have teachers working tirelessly. Although we know the Department lacks funds for schools, we believe that if money is allocated for the Learner Attainment Improvement Strategy (LAIS), principals can plan more effectively,” he explained.
He added that such funding would allow principals to offer incentives to teachers who dedicate extra time to help learners through additional classes.
A spokesperson for the Eastern Cape Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, said he was unable to comment on the suggestions made by these members, as he was still waiting for feedback from directors of this department.
