The unemployed and job-seeking youth of East London were empowered with critical information and skills over a two-day Bumbingomso workseeker support workshop at the Duncan Village Library last week.

The attendees gained valuable insight into professionalism, resume building, interview skills, improving their employability, and networking strategies.

Siphumelele Dyakophu, hub career coach, told the Express,

The workshops aim to foster a sense of confidence and self-reliance in young people as they navigate the job market. It often includes hands-on activities, role-playing scenarios, and interactive sessions to make the learning process engaging and practical.

Dyakophu explained that the program is designed to help participants practice and refine their interview skills in a realistic, low-pressure environment. “We did mock interviews to build confidence, improve communication skills, receive constructive criticism, and enhance professionalism and time management.”

She said they also offered guidance on crafting effective and professional CVs, writing personalized and compelling cover letters, helped them set up professional email accounts, and taught them email etiquette for job applications and professional correspondence.

The Bumbingomso team of career coaches has been going around the Buffalo City Metro offering professional advice on how to handle unemployment stress to unemployed youth and also equipping them with skills and competencies for accessing income-generating opportunities.

The job market is highly competitive, but Hlumelo Vellem says after attending the workshop she feels confident enough to pursue job opportunities. “I learned interesting ways of writing my CV to make it stand out. The workshop really helped me know how to align my strengths and interests with potential job opportunities.”
