MTHATHA – Two elderly men, aged 67 and 74, were arrested by the OR Tambo Stock Theft Prevention Task Team for possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition at Gaduka locality, Upper Ncise Administrative Area, in Mthatha.
According to SAPS spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the arrests were made today, 30 January 2026, at approximately 01:00, following information received by police. Members of the task team conducted searches at the suspects’ residences.
“During a search at the homestead of the suspect (74), police recovered a CZ 7.65 (9mm) pistol with an intact serial number and live rounds of ammunition, which were hidden in his bedroom.” He added, “The suspect failed to produce a licence to lawfully possess the firearm and ammunition and was arrested on the spot.”
Matyolo stated that further investigation revealed that the firearm was previously due for destruction in 2018.
“In a separate search, the suspect (67) was found in possession of a 9mm Norinco pistol with an erased serial number, along with live rounds of ammunition.”
The suspect was also unable to provide a valid licence and was subsequently arrested.
Matyolo added that both suspects are expected to appear before the Mthatha Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges of unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.
The OR Tambo Acting District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli, applauded the OR Tambo Stock Theft Prevention Task Team for their dedication and continued commitment to fighting crime in the district since the unit’s establishment.
