The King William’s Town SPCA has conducted a raid on a property in Amahlati, uncovering a heartbreaking situation that left their seasoned inspector in tears.
Over 400 animals, including chickens, quails, rabbits, goats, dogs, cats, exotic animals, rats, and mice, were found living in deplorable conditions.
“The animals were confined to overcrowded cages filled with their own feces. Every cage was filthy, overcrowded, and wired shut, likely with food pellets pushed through holes. There was no fresh water, and the bowls emitted a putrid smell,” Annette Rademeyer, a senior inspector at the King William’s Town SPCA, told Mthatha Express.
She said when food and water were provided, the animals frantically rushed to consume them, highlighting the extent of their neglect. “In my years as an SPCA inspector, I have never encountered such a severe case of animal cruelty.”
“The individual responsible suffers from a hoarding disorder, which tragically spiraled out of control. They were breeding rats as snake feed but failed to seek help when the situation became unmanageable.”
Rademeyer said cruelty charges will be laid, and investigations are ongoing.
They were forced to euthanize a 28-year-old horse due to its severe medical condition.
“This case has deeply impacted all of us, and we are urgently appealing for funds to provide food and care for the rescued animals.”
The King William’s Town SPCA is appealing to members of the public to donate.
