THE Mthatha High Court has convicted and sentenced Siphesonke Goloshe (36) to 15 years of direct imprisonment for the murder of municipal traffic officer, Daniel Sabelo Mxoli (61). Goloshe was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
Mxoli was stationed at King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality in Mthatha as a traffic officer when he was attacked. Hawks’ spokesperson, Warrant Officer Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana, stated that Goloshe’s sentencing followed his arrest by the Mthatha Serious Organised Crime Investigation of the Hawks on October 14, 2022. Goloshe made his first court appearance on October 17, 2022, and was remanded in custody since his arrest.
“It is alleged that on the day of the incident, Mxoli was on duty controlling traffic at Sutherland Street in Mthatha. The victim was performing his duties when Goloshe, driving a Toyota Tazz, disobeyed his instructions to stop. He drove past traffic lights and reportedly pulled over next to a shop not far from where the victim was working,” said Mhlakuvana.
He added that Goloshe then exited his vehicle with a 9mm pistol, approached the victim, and reportedly fired two gunshots at him. Mhlakuvana confirmed that Mxoli succumbed to bullet wounds and died at the scene.
“Subsequently, the suspect fled the scene. A murder case docket was opened and later handed over to the Hawks for further investigation. On the same day, a manhunt was launched, during which the suspect was traced, and his vehicle was found at his sister’s house. An intensive investigation by the Hawks led to his arrest on October 14, 2022.”
Goloshe made several court appearances in unsuccessful attempts to be granted bail until his sentencing by the Mthatha High Court on November 27, 2024. The Provincial Head of the Hawks, Major General Mboiki Obed Ngwanya, expressed his gratitude to the investigating team for securing a substantial sentence for the accused.
