Motorists travelling between Eastern Cape and KZN via the R61 road through Mzamba are advised to use the N2 via Kokstad and Port Shepstone instead, as service delivery protests between Bizana and Mzamba at Msizazwe persist.

Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson Unathi Binqose said the road remains closed because protesters have barricaded the road with rocks and burning tyres.

He said that the crux of their protest is a demand for electricity in their community.

“Traffic Officers have been deployed to various roads to divert traffic towards Port Shepstone to go through Mpunzi Drift, turning at PetroSA filling station near Redoubt,” he said.

“Public order police are on the scene to disperse protesters and to have the road reopened to traffic again.”
