One of the three top achievers from Nyanya Senior Secondary School in Ngcobo, Mvano Mabono (16), who obtained position one in the entire district of Chris Hani East, advised learners to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

Mabona was one of the Grade 12 learners awarded by the premier of the Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, and MEC of the Department of Education, Fundile Gade, in the Matric Top Achievers Class of 2023 at International Convention Centre (ICC) in East London, last week.

He was awarded with Emihle Yeki and Athule Mvano, who were also awarded as Top Achievers, both from Nyanga.

He said that drugs give pleasure for the present moment, and destroy the lives of youth for the upcoming years.

You must be sober-minded and learn from peers around you like me, that without drugs success is assured. We must know that drugs are a major problem in our schools which sometimes inhibits learners from reaching their full potential, because most of them believe that drugs like weed intsangu gives a learner power to study the whole night without feeling drowsy, but instead a learner will stare at a book for hours as if he/she is understanding what they are studying but they are not.

He added that in maths he obtained 91 percent, in Geography 92 percent, Physics, 94 percent, Isixhosa 94 percent, English 84 percent, Life Orientation 94 percent and in Life Science 89 percent. He confirmed that he got the support he needed from his parents, friends, and from everyone who surrounded him including his teachers who always believed in him.

Mabono will be studying towards an Actuarial Science Degree at Wits University in Johannesburg.
