The Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose confirmed that three people have lost their lives while two sustained severe injuries after single vehicle lost control and overturned on the N2 road in Butterworth near Walter Sisulu University in the early hours of this morning at about 03:00.

Binqose reported that a VW Polo, carrying five males and traveling from the direction of Butterworth, lost control. Three male passengers died at the scene.

“The injured driver and one passenger sustained severe injuries and were taken to Butterworth Hospital for further medical examination.

“It is alleged that reckless and negligent driving was the main contributing factors for the crash,” said Binqose.

He confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened at Msobomvu Police Station for further investigations.
