Qumbu police are investigating three murder cases after three people were allegedly shot and killed in two separate incidents at Ngxakolo Administrative Area in Qumbu between October 30 and 31.

According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the first incident occurred around 20:00 on October 31 when a 24-year-old man left a local tavern and was found dead the following morning with one bullet hole in the head with no known suspect.

The second incident, a double murder, occurred at about 20:45, where a woman (54) and her 30-year-old son were shot dead in their homestead with their vehicle put in flames within the premises.

“It is alleged that two young boys, ages unknown, entered a certain homestead and pointed the owner (man) with firearms, demanding nothing as they did nothing to the man. The community was quickly alerted, and community members chased the boys,” Matyolo said.

According to Matyolo, whilst chasing the boys, gunshots were heard in a neighbouring homestead, as well as flames as the car in the homestead was being torched.

“The owner of the homestead with a burning car was also amongst those who were chasing the young boys with firearms. On rushing to the homestead with a burning car, two bodies were found lying lifeless and were identified as mother and son of the homestead.”

“More than eight boys were coming out of that homestead shooting at the members of the community, and they ran for their lives,” Matyolo added.

According to police, it is alleged that the shooting and killing of the mother and son was in retaliation to the death of a deceased who was shot dead a day before.

Police said there had been threats for revenge, and the murders may be stock-theft related.

Police have yet to make an arrest in both incidents but said investigations were advanced.
