Teacher and poet Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa was shot at her home at Govan Mbeki Township in Dutywa.

The relatives of the teacher and poet, Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa (46), who was fatally shot while at her home on August 8, described her as somebody who always wanted peace. Potelwa-Mpafa was a teacher at Dinizulu Senior Secondary School in Dutywa.

She will be laid to rest at Gxara locality in Dutywa on August 19.

Potelwa-Mpafa passed away at home, following fatal execution-style gunshot wounds from unknown assailants. This was confirmed by family spokesperson, Vusi Potelwa, stating that they had lost someone who always loved her family.

According to him, Potelwa-Mpafa was a mother of three, and she died while preparing for her son’s initiation ceremony that was going to be held on December 28.

“She showed us love and gave support when there was a need to do so. She always shared jokes, because she was somebody who loved laughing,” said Potelwa.

Eastern Cape Department of Education, MEC Fundile Gade, sent his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late Potelwa-Mpafa. He also sent condolences to the bereaved family and friends, hoping they find solace in God during this trying time in their lives.

According to the spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mali Mtima, for now the details of this incident are still unknown, and a case has been opened with the South African Police Services, and an investigation is underway.

“All individuals affected by the incident at school will be provided a psycho-social grant, as the district will activate the service for them,” said Mtima.

Police spokesperson, warrant officer Majola Nkohli, confirmed that police are investigating a case of murder after Potelwa-Mpafa was fatally shot at her home in Dutywa.

He said it is alleged that on August 8, 2023, around 21:15, four unknown men stormed a house at Govan Mbeki Township and shot the deceased.

“She was later identified as Nomfusi Potelwa-Mpafa. At this stage the motive for the incident is unknown but the police are following all leads,” said Nkohli.
