Suspect to appear in East London Magistrates’ Court after R720K ecstasy bust at Windmill

A 26-year-old suspect, following their arrest on Saturday, March 1, is scheduled to appear in the East London Magistrates’ Court today, March 3, facing charges of drug trafficking. The arrest was the result of an intelligence-driven operation by the Hawks, who intercepted 6,000 ecstasy tablets valued at approximately R720,000 at Windmill, in East London.

According to HAWKS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba the East London based South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (SANEB) unit received a tip-off was received on Friday, 28 February, alerting authorities to a suspect allegedly transporting drugs from Durban to Cape Town via a long-distance bus.

Fumba said the Hawks swiftly mobilised and monitored the suspect’s movements as the bus made its way to East London.

Fumba stated reports indicate that at about 10:00 on March 1, the bus arrived at the Windmill depot in East London, where passengers disembarked for a short break.

“The Hawks operatives maintained surveillance, patiently waiting for the suspect to reboard before making their move.

“Upon searching the suspect’s bag, the police discovered a suspicious brown package, which was later confirmed to allegedly contain thousands of ecstasy tablets,” he reported on the incident. 

“The suspect was immediately arrested,” he added. 

The Provincial Head of the Hawks praised the team for their vigilance and commitment to dismantling drug syndicates and ensuring that drug traffickers face the full might of the law.
