Six individuals suspected of involvement in extortion activities were fatally shot during a police operation on the R61 road between Mthatha and Ngcobo yesterday, June 23.

According to official reports, the incident occurred during an intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS). Police state that after being stopped, the suspects exited their vehicle and allegedly opened fire on officers. Law enforcement personnel returned fire, resulting in the deaths of all six suspects.

Authorities report that firearms were recovered from the scene. These weapons will undergo ballistic testing as part of the ongoing investigation.

Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha issued a statement following the incident: “We have learnt with shock the fatal shooting of the six suspects allegedly involved in extortion. The incident is taking place as SAPS are working tirelessly to combat crime in the province. Police can arrest or stop anyone, regardless of their position or status, if they have committed a crime and will defend themselves when attacked.”

In a police statement released yesterday, June 23, police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana confirmed, “The identities of the deceased are currently unknown. Forensic processes are underway to formally identify them.”
