Robbery suspect appears in Dutywa Magistrate’s Court




Brian Matlala (40), suspected of being involved in a post office robbery in Dutywa briefly
appeared before the Dutywa Magistrate’s Court today, October 24.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson, Luxolo Tyali stating the matter was postponed until October 31, 2022, for bail application.

“He is
charged with three counts, robbery with aggravating circumstances, possession
of firearm and attempted murder,” said Tyali.

Police spokesperson, Brigadier Tembinkosi Kinana said that it is alleged that on
October 21, 2022, at around 08:30, police members who were on routine patrol foiled
a robbery at Dutywa police office. Kinana said a shootout ensued between
members and at least three armed men.

“Two suspects manged to escape and
one-armed suspect who was trapped inside allegedly held nine employees at
gunpoint. Back-up arrived with a police negotiator who successfully
negotiated for the release of the nine employees,” said Kinana.

He added that Matlala
eventually surrendered and was detained on charges of business robbery,
kidnapping with an additional charge of an unlicensed firearm.

“The seized firearm
is to be sent for ballistic investigation. Police are following all leads and
are urging anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect
to contact 082 301 7762.”
