The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Eastern Cape Development Corporation (ECDC), Ayanda Wakaba, advised members of the public not to enter the Windsor Hotel in Mthatha, and for the illegal occupants to evacuate the building as a matter of urgency, as it is not safe for occupation.
He said that the building, situated on 36 Sutherland Street, has been illegally occupied since 2018 with the ECDC engaged in ongoing legal processes to regain control of the building, and this has resulted in ECDC being unable to undertake maintenance of the building for the past five years.
According to Wakaba, the ECDC has undertaken steps in the recent past to warn illegal occupants that the building is a potential safety hazard.
He said that occupants have been warned and advised to vacate the property for their own safety through various engagements, including notices on the building as well as on various media platforms.
“We hope the public will take heed of the warning to avoid any potential injury or loss of life.”
