Provincial Commissioner applauds excellent seizure of eleven homemade firearms

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, has applauded the excellent efforts of Mtontsasa Police Officers who recovered 11 homemade firearms and effected one arrest yesterday morning. Lieutenant General Mene commended the remarkable efforts of the members at SAPS in Mtontsasa.

“The recovery of the firearms not only prevents potential harm to our communities but also underscores the critical role our police officers play in curbing the proliferation of firearms. Their diligence and courageous efforts by our police officers will undoubtedly have a positive impact on our community,” said Mene.

Police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, confirmed that Mthandeni Goodwin Somzana ( 47) appeared in the Mthontsasa Magistrate’s Court yesterday on a charge of illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, he was remanded in custody until Wednesday, September 6.

She said it is alleged that the Vispol and detective members were following up on information about a robbery at a local school earlier in the week when they searched a homestead at Mhlwazini locality in the Lusikisiki area. She said police were searching for 16 iPads that were stolen from the school.

“While searching for a potential suspect, a homestead was searched in the area, and three homemade firearms were found in a wardrobe. She said a thorough search of the house both inside and outside was conducted, and a further seven homemade firearms were found in the boot of a Mercedes Benz, 45 rounds of ammunition (9mm and rifle) was also confiscated,” said Naidu.
