Qumbu police have arrested two suspects, aged 21 and 23, who are linked to a spate of killings and robberies committed recently in different areas of Qumbu.
According to police spokesperson Captain Welile Matyolo, the two, from Mvumelwano Administrative Area, were arrested along N2 road near Qumbu CBD at about 17:00 yesterday, November 6.
“It is alleged that the two suspects committed house robbery in Tina Falls, where a firearm was robbed. It is further alleged that they shot and robbed a truck driver who was passing by Qumbu of his firearm who later died in hospital.”
“Another male victim was also killed on Friday, November 3, in Qumbu. They are also linked to business robberies in Qumbu, Tsolo and Mthatha, and detectives are busy with the investigations,” Matolo said.
Matyolo added that a day before the arrest of the two, local police detectives formed a team to look for the suspects with informers planted around Qumbu to track them down.
“They were spotted in Qumbu CBD in a white VW Polo sedan, cornered and arrested along the (N2) national road with the assistance of local stock theft unit detectives,” added Matyolo.
Two unlicensed firearms with ammunition were found in their possession, which is suspected to be the one robbed from the deceased truck driver and another stolen in Tina Falls during a house burglary.
“The white vehicle they were driving was hijacked in Kokstad. Qumbu detectives are busy with their investigation linking the suspects to many business robberies in Qumbu, Tsolo, Mt Frere and Mthatha,” Matyolo said.
The suspects are expected to appear at Qumbu Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, November 8, charged with possession of unlicensed firearms with ammunition, having a hijacked vehicle and two counts of murder.
OR Tambo District police commissioner Major General Pumzile has commended Qumbu police for their hard work apprehending suspects.
