THE SAFA OR Tambo Men’s Under-21 squad were crowned champions of the 2025 Steve Vukile Tshwete Games, known as the Premier Games, after securing a 1-0 victory against the SAFA Buffalo City squad.

This victory marks the first time the tournament has been won by the OR Tambo Region. In previous years, the tournament was dominated by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Buffalo City Municipality.

The Premier Games were held in Gqeberha from February 21 to February 23.

Coach Sibulele Mtshemla, who holds a C football coaching licence, expressed his gratitude, as this was his first time competing in this provincial tournament and winning it.

“It’s my first time going to the provincial games. I went to compete for the first time and won it for the first time.”

“For the first time since I was given this opportunity, I had confidence that we would win it. I hate participating in anything; instead, I always want to compete.”

This is one of Mtshemla’s significant achievements as the head coach, marking the first time the tournament has been won by the OR Tambo Region.

Previously, OR Tambo had been eliminated in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, while Buffalo City Municipality and Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality always shared the title.

“I did my research to prepare for this tournament. I did everything to remind the players that we need to build the name and bring the cup to our region, to remind people that we still have talent in the OR Tambo region,” said Coach Mtshemla.

“I am grateful; this is a great experience for me. We worked very well with players, team managers, and SAFA at large. On Saturday, we played three games, and on Sunday, we managed to win the final against the Buffalo City squad. Against all odds, we managed to secure the victory. All the challenges we faced during the tournament will give us valuable experience going forward.”

Meanwhile, in women’s football, the Nelson Mandela Bay women’s squad were crowned champions after defeating Alfred Nzo girls 2-0.

The games were attended by several dignitaries, including the MEC of Sport, Recreation, Arts, and Culture in the province, Sibulele Ngongo.
