Libode-based Nyandeni Local Municipality has announced
the death of its incumbent council speaker Councillor Mcebisi Mtobela.
The news of Mtobela’s death were confirmed by the
municipal spokesperson Ncebakazi Kolwane in a statement this morning, October
1.
“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we announce the passing of
the Honorable Speaker of the Council of Nyandeni Local Municipality, Cllr
Mcebisi Mtobela. Cllr Mtobela has been a dedicated public servant, a tireless
advocate for community development, and a steadfast leader in our municipality
for over two decades,” read the statement.
Mtobela
joined the Nyandeni Local Municipality in 2000 as a ward councillor and
chairperson of the standing committee on infrastructure.
“His
leadership extended beyond his role as a ward councillor as he played various
crucial roles in the leadership of our municipality.”
“In 2006 he
became a member of the mayoral committee responsible for spatial planning until
2011 when he became council chief whip for two terms and was later elected as
the council speaker where he presided over key council deliberations and
decisions that shaped our municipality,” said Kolwane.
Kolwane said
Mtobela’s legacy was characterised by dedication, integrity, and compassion.
“He leaves
behind a council that is stronger and more united because of his upright
leadership,” she said.

regarding memorial services and tributes will be announced in due course.
The local
municipality has extended its deepest condolences to his family, friends,
colleagues, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.
“In
honouring Cllr Mcebisi Mtobela’s memory, we pledge to continue the work he
began and to uphold the values and principles he held dear. His spirit will
live on, in the progress we make as a municipality and in the lives he touched,”
Kolwane concluded.
