Zilindile Mjodwana, one of the most significant horse owners under Nyandeni horse racing, has died at the age of 67.
The family has confirmed his passing.
Mjodwana had been working as the treasurer of Nyandeni horse racing, since 2018. Nyandeni horse racing includes Libode, Ngqeleni and Port St John’s town.
His death on March 28 shocked the sports fraternity, as he was one of the long-serving horse owners.
Mjodwana had three horses and two jockeys, Gcinile Mayana, also known as Mtembu, and Msa Majeke.
His horses won big local races around the Eastern Cape, and in November 2022 his horse called Thethume finished in second place in Berlin in East London.
Former Nyandeni sports spokesperson, Vukile Kota, who worked closely with the late horse owner, describes Mawawa’s death as a huge blow to the horse fraternity.
“He was more than a sports person. As one of the local business people he assisted a number of poor families across the Eastern Cape. He also donated food to disadvantaged families,” said Kota.
Kota said that Mjodwana had served the Nyandeni horse racing with dignity. “He even led a delegation to King Ndamase Ndamase, calling for intervention to improve horse racing under Nyandeni.”
Mjodwana will be laid to rest on April 15 in Qandu locality, Port St Johns.
