This was confirmed by Spokesperson for Department of Transport, Unathi Binqose today.
At least 12 people sustained some serious injuries, while 27 escaped with minor injuries after a single decker bus lost control and overturned on a gravel road around 15:45 in Nkonkoni village (Mbhobheleni Administrative Area) in Libode.
“The bus from AB350 company (Marcopolo) was travelling from Mthatha to various villages in Libode, dropping off shoppers and travellers. The driver lost control when the bus lost power while driving uphill, it reversed out of control and overturned,” Binqose said.
Those with serious injuries were airlifted to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha. “Some were transported to a local hospital and others treated on the scene and released.”
Binqose added that an investigation into the actual cause of the accident is underway, but preliminary investigations point to a mechanical failure.
