The committee plays a crucial role in redressing historical injustices by standardising and transforming place names in line with the country’s democratic values, and the preservation and affirmation of its heritage through indigenous naming.
“Place names give us valuable insight into history and provide clues about South Africa’s cultural and social development. In a manner of speaking, place names are the table of contents of the country’s history of customs and traditions often long forgotten,” said Sibulele Ngongo, the MEC of the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, explaining the importance of the role of the committee and reinforcing that names hold deep significance, shaping identity, culture, and history.
Since 2003, the Eastern Cape has led in name changes. “The work must extend beyond renaming; it must embed itself in education, heritage, and social consciousness. Collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity are key to ensuring that future generations not only understand but actively engage in this process,” said Ngongo.
“With contributions from key stakeholders, today’s induction sets a strong foundation for the journey,” said Ngongo.
