SCHOOLS around Mnquma area were excited last week after MultiChoice built a multi-purpose sports court which will be used to play netball, hockey, volleyball and five-a-side soccer at Butterworth High School.
The multi-purpose sports court project began last year, and was completed in February.
On March 7, Eastern Cape MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, Nonceba Kontsiwe, and MultiChoice, officially opened the multi-purpose court at Butterworth High School.
After the official opening they handed over the multi-purpose sports court to the schools around Mnquma, and communities, to use for sport development.
During the event, MultiChoice and the Department Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture donated soccer and netball kit to eight different schools situated in the Mnquma area.
They also donated sporting equipment, such as body vests, to the Butterworth team, Thunderbirds Ladies, who play in the Hollywoodbets Super League.
Kontsiwe said the aim of the department was to ensure that they assist schools in sports development, and help youth to make their dreams come true through sport.
She urged local sport structures and parents to work together with the department, so that the kids can have a bright future in sport.
In addition, Kontsiwe thanked MultiChoice for their partnership with the department, to help all the kids who need sports equipment boost their dreams of becoming professionals in their sporting codes.
She also highlighted that her department had recently handed over equipment worth R872,500 in the Amathole District area and BCM area.
With this money they bought equipment for soccer, netball, tennis, and boxing around Amathole and the BCM area.
Butterworth High School’s netball team captain, Lorna Goniwe, who was speaking on behalf of the learners during the event, thanked MultiChoice and the department for their contribution to sport and also promised that they would use the facilities with care.
Sports structures from Amathole and school teachers were present during the event to receive their sports facility.
