The secretary general for the Eastern Cape Chamber of Business in Mthatha, Dr Andile Nontso has confirmed that the entire business fraternity is shocked following the murder of local business owner Mkhululi Kubukeli.

Kubukeli’s body was discovered at one of his establishments, Le Pearl Grande Event and Entertainment Centre, alongside the R61 near Corhana village, about 5km outside Mthatha on Saturday, December 3.

“The 58-year-old previously owned the Four Seasons Boutique in central Mthatha for several years. At the time of his death, he owned Le Pearl Boutique Hotel in town and the Le Pearl Grande Entertainment Centre,” said Nontso.

He described Kubukeli as an honest, quiet and humble man who spent his entire life creating jobs for the community.

“Mthatha is a war zone, and businesspeople are being chased away by criminals who want to ensure that we stop creating jobs. Businessmen and businesswomen are under siege. Our hearts go out to the Mlumumba family.”

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said the deceased was found inside his business premises with a gunshot wound in the upper body on December 3. He said it is believed that liquor was also stolen from the premises.

“The body was found in the dining area with a gunshot wound in the upper body. At this stage, the motive for the shooting is unknown, and police are following all leads. Anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of the suspect(s) is urged to contact the nearest police station,” said Nkohli.
