The Eastern Cape Department of Education MEC, Fundile Gade, welcomes back both learners and educators from the Winter recess period, as all schools open tomorrow, July 9.

Gade hopes that both educators and learners have used the holiday period efficiently and are geared to resume their academic work in preparation for the final examinations.

He urged both School Governing Bodies (SGB) and School Management Teams (SMT) to work together to ensure that schools that have been vandalised during the holidays are reported and fixed.

“We are aware that some of our schools become soft targets for the malicious criminals, but working with the SAPS and Community Policing Forum will help combat such crimes. We hope schools will use the few available days for revision and to better prepare learners for their final examinations,” said Gade.

He urged all schools to report any damage that may have been caused by bad weather since this is a windy period.

Furthermore, schools are advised to utilise their Maintenance Budget to fix broken windows and doors to ensure learners study in a conducive teaching and learning environment as they return to school.
