The MEC for the Department of Health in the Eastern Cape, Ntandokazi Capa, has expressed shock and deep concern at the tragic deaths of two St Elizabeth Hospital employees — a professional nurse, Thandokazi Duntsula (40), and a deputy director — who were reportedly shot and killed at their home in Palmerton Village, near Lusikisiki, last week.
According to a statement issued by the Office of the Eastern Cape Health MEC, the motive behind the killings remains unknown, and police have launched a criminal investigation. This marks the second brutal attack on health professionals within a week, following the murder of a 56-year-old ambulance practitioner who was gunned down after finishing a shift in Jansenville.
MEC Capa condemned the violence, highlighting its impact on communities.
“Losing any life is one too many. It is even more devastating when health professionals are targeted, as they play a crucial role in serving their communities. On behalf of the entire health department, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.
“These colleagues passed away at a time when the country relied heavily on their expertise and dedication as professionals committed to serving fellow citizens,” said Capa.
The MEC has urged police to act swiftly to bring those responsible for these heinous crimes to justice.
Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, confirmed that seasoned detectives are working tirelessly to track down the suspects involved in the Lusikisiki double murder.
According to police reports, the tragedy unfolded last week at the couple’s home in the Dick locality of Lusikisiki. The husband had just arrived home in his vehicle when two masked men confronted him at gunpoint.
“It is alleged that the suspects were seeking his wife. They forced the husband into the house, where they located the wife after she emerged from the bedroom. The suspects then opened fire, fatally shooting both husband and wife. The female domestic worker was left unharmed,” said Mawisa.
Police have opened a case of double murder and are appealing to the public for assistance. Authorities have urged anyone with information to contact Lusikisiki Detective Head Lieutenant Colonel Siyabulela Kufa at 082 302 5118, the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, or their nearest police station.
