A state of disaster has been declared in Mbhashe Local Municipality, after devastatingly heavy rains accompanied by strong winds, thunderstorms, and lightning, left a trail of destruction in Willowvale at Wards 29, 24, 23 and 21, last week.
According to the statement issued by the mayor of Mbhashe Local Municipality, Councillor Samkelo Janda, houses had collapsed, roofs were torn off, people injured along with livestock, and damage was caused to infrastructure, including electricity power lines and poles.
One of the victims was later transferred to Butterworth Hospital. Janda said that Councillor Nomvuyiseko Mgedezi, the Portfolio Head for Planning and Development, accompanied by Council Speaker, Councillor Babalwa Majavu, and the Chief Whip, Councillor Ludwe Mantshiyose, and municipal officials, visited the affected areas and families this morning.
He said that the Provincial Department of Human Settlements is busy facilitating emergency temporary structures for the displaced families.
Janda appealed to all citizens and businesses to assist victims by donating food, clothes, and by opening their doors while they sought alternative accommodation.
“As the municipality, we would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, and wish a speedy recovery to the injured people. Those who have not reported their damages are advised to file their reports with their respective councillors.”
