Man to appear in court in connection with ex-fiancé’s murder

A 35-year-old man from Luyengweni locality in Mount Frere is due to appear before the Mount Frere Magistrate’s Court today, in connection with the murder of  his 36-year-old ex-fiancé, Phumeza Mtsheng.

According to police spokesperson, Colonel Priscilla Naidu, it is alleged that at about midnight yesterday, the suspect went to Msthengu’s house and found her with her current boyfriend. 

“He then assaulted Msthengu and took her to his house where she suffered further physical abuse and was forced to stay the night with the suspect. At about 06:00 he attempted to wake her up but discovered that she was dead,” said Naidu.

Police were alerted and the deceased was found on the bed with multiple injuries. The suspect was arrested at the crime scene.

Naidu noted that Gender Based Violence (GBV) and femicide are one of the most systematic and widespread human rights violations that affect people from across all ages and socio-economic status.

“Every effort must be made to end this violence and to bring the perpetrators of these crimes to justice,” said Naidu. 

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant general Nomthetheleli Mene reiterated the call to fight the abuse of women and children, “Gender Based Violence and Femicide is a priority and perpetrators of such crimes will not be at the mercy of our justice system.
