A man from Traco locality in Mthatha briefly appeared before the Butterworth Magistrate’s Court on April 24 on charges of unlawful possession of human tissue.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Majola Nkohli said it is alleged that the suspect was arrested by members of the public after they allegedly found him in possession of a man’s private part at a shopping mall in Butterworth on April 20.
“It is believed that he was looking for a buyer in Butterworth,” said Nkholi.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that a private part was removed from a 68-year-old man in the OR Tambo District.”
Nkholi said the suspect will be transferred to Mthatha where he is expected to face a charge of attempted murder.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene has praised the community for arresting the suspect.
“This is a despicable and cruel act. The actions of the suspect are inhumane and justice must take its course,” said Mene.
