EASTERN CAPE– The Eastern Cape Department of Education has reminded schools that events involving learners during tuition time require prior approval, as schools prepare for the final examinations.

Spokesperson for the Department of Education, Malibongwe Mtima, confirmed that Head of Department Sharon Maasdorp appreciates the support provided to learners by various stakeholders as schools prepare them for the final examinations.

However, he said this support must be provided in line with departmental protocols to avoid disruptions to teaching and learning, particularly during this crucial period.

“Therefore, schools are reminded to first obtain permission from the Head of Department through the relevant district office prior to their events. This is done to preserve and protect teaching and learning time. The requirement for prior approval is also intended to ensure that the Accounting Officer, in this case the Head of Department, is informed of activities taking place at schools,” he said.

He added that any activity involving learners must be conducted with the necessary parental or guardian consent, where applicable.

Mtima said schools and organisers are expected to ensure that the required consent is obtained before learners participate in any activity outside their normal teaching and learning programme.

“Events that may not be hosted during tuition time without the required permission include ‘Anti-Pens Down’ campaigns, motivational talks and other awareness campaigns.

“The department urges all schools to adhere strictly to established departmental protocols and to ensure that teaching and learning remain the primary focus during this critical period.

“Schools found to have breached these protocols will be subject to the relevant internal departmental processes.”
