The Mayor of King Sabatha Dalindyebo (KSD), Councillor Nyaniso Nelani, said work to revamp the swimming pool in Mthatha town started last week. He indicated this should be completed by March next year.

According to him, this is another project among many in the pipeline to be executed to revive KSD. The municipality is still in the process of achieving the Kigali vision, to clean, beautify, and green open spaces.

Nelani said amenities to be revamped include swimming pools for adults and children, a water fountain, a water pump, changing rooms, fencing of the park, construction of the thatched gazebo and electrical works.

“Vitsha Civils was awarded to carry out this project after the municipality had approved the Municipal Infrastructure Grant (MIG) funding. This swimming pool is the pride of the people of this municipality.

“This is one of the important places that were very important for the people of KSD and surrounding areas because it is where they used to meet with their loved ones for different purposes. They were meeting here coming from different places. It was a meeting place for young and old people,” said Nelani.

He said the time has come to bring happiness and to lift the flag of KSD by revamping it.

“The reason which led us to delay was that this facility is very old, so we needed permission from the Heritage Council because when you want to touch it seriously you need to seek permission first.”

Nelani said they were happy because their puzzle pieces were coming together now as they had spoken before. According to him, they said that the KSD and Mthatha must be their pride, especially by looking at these important places.

I can confirm that we will reach what we want to achieve. We have a lot of things that are in our pipeline in terms of planning, as well as in terms of performance. We have a service provider that is doing detailed planning. This is one of the projects that we are looking forward to revamp our town.

He confirmed that they were planning to do something about the swimming pool in Ngangelizwe Township, also in Mthatha, as they promised before. He said that when they are talking about something they ensure that they bring it to the table in terms of action in their planning.

Nelani added that this is one of the examples of doing that, by developing key things. He said that they had launched the Parking Meter System which is adding to their planning of revamping of Mthatha.

“We are not here to change anything but to revamp these structures. At the same time we are going to fence the whole of Savoy Park so that people can use the proper entrance.

“We are trying to limit the vandalism which happens here and to make sure that this place is of a good standard. We are happy to say that this project will bring back the life that we have experienced before.

The challenges that happened here before with the vandalism were due to the lack of security,” said Nelani.
