Mnquma Local Municipality in Butterworth remain committed to contributing to the development of sport in an effort to keep youth away from wrongdoing, such as crime and drugs.

This follows after the municipality showed support when they handed over a brand-new soccer kit to Ward 5’s local football team recently.

The handover took place at Zizamele Community Hall in Ward 5. Portfolio Head for Strategic Management, Councillor Sisa Matutu, did the soccer kit handover to the coaching staff and players of Black Diamond Football Club on behalf of the municipality.

Ward 5 Councillor, Mawande Xabela, was also in attendance to witness the event when the municipality made a great contribution to sports development, particularly in Zizamele.

Speaking during the event, Matutu highlighted that the handover of the soccer kit to Black Diamond Football Club is part of a long-term strategy to empower young people and unearth talent from the townships.

“As it has been proven in history, sport has a huge potential to keep young people away from social ills, such as crime, teenage pregnancy, and substance abuse. So, we are investing in sport to allow young people to reach their full potential and one day fly the Mnquma flag high, by competing at a national and international level like so many others who have come before them,” said Matutu.

He also thanked the Special Programmes Unit office from the municipality for playing an important role in making the event a success.

After Black Diamond Football Club received the soccer kit from Mnquma, their coach, Cikizwa Potelwa, thanked the municipality for the gesture, adding that it would restore the pride of players and inspire them to even greater heights.

Potelwa told the municipality that their aim as the team is to assist the youth in making their dreams come true in sport and keep them away from any wrongdoing.

She also thanked the municipality for continuing to show support for sport.

The municipality is well-known for hosting the annual Mayor’s Cup which benefits many teams in different sporting codes through donations and prizes of sport equipment.
