MEMBERS of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB) launched a Learner Ambassador Programme with the aim of having a helping hand to assist in spreading the word of fighting alcohol abuse in schools, last week.
According to ECLB spokesperson, Mgwebi Msiya, there were nine schools from around Ngcobo that attended the programme.
“We decided to add this programme to our initiatives so that even if we are not at the school there should be someone who continues to be our voice to others. We started this programme in 2022, with the aim of ensuring there are learners who talk to their peers about the danger of using alcohol,” said Msiya.
According to him, they also communicate with school management to ensure that they give them two slots in a week so that they are able to talk to their school mates.
He said that in Ngcobo there were 40 learners who were selected from the Ngcobo district, with four learners selected from each school.
“We will go back and train them so that they know what to do; we will also give them some pamphlets that they will distribute to their peers. Our aim is to continue with this programme so that we can manage to fight this behaviour in our schools. We will now host it at Ingquza Hill Local Municipality because there are lots of things that are happening in that area also.
“We will also visit Sarah Baartman and Matatiele Local Municipality to host the same programme.”
The schools that attended were Ngcobo Village, Phakamani Senior Secondary School, Manzana Senior Secondary School, Cwecweni Senior Secondary School, Clarkebury Agricultural School, Ngubesizwe Senior Secondary School, Nyanga Senior Secondary School, Khanyolwethu Senior Secondary School and Sikhonza Senior Secondary School.
