The Department of Social Development in the OR Tambo District has closed the Mthatha and Mqanduli service offices due to an outbreak of snakes and reptiles.

This was confirmed
by the spokesperson for Department of Social Development in OR Tambo District,
Nomasakhe Nonxuba.

According to her, these outbreaks have been caused by old
infrastructure of the buildings.

“Mqanduli Service Office has been closed in
2019 and Mthatha Service Office in April 2023. There are alternative
arrangements and negotiations between the department and the King Sabatha
Dalindyebo (KSD) Local Municipality for sharing of offices in Mqanduli as the
permanent project is still underway.

“In Mthatha Service Office, the Social
Workers are sharing offices in Botha Sigcawu Building as the discussions with
the Department of Public Works to relocate to KD Building are still being
discussed,” said Nonxuba.

She added that the department has already done
procurement for snake catchers, anti-snake chemicals and bush cutters.

Nonxuba
said in the meantime people who need social workers must go to Botha Sigcawu
Building on the 10th floor, office number 12 and must contact 047 531
3093.

“People can also call Beauty Mavumengwana on 063 685 7119 for Mqanduli
Service Office or Mthatha Service Office call Akhona Magwentshu on 066 412 8768.
