About 500 protesters marched to the Butterworth
Magistrate’s Court on May 10 to show solidarity with Yibanathi Mpama
(29) who has become the latest victim of the gender-based violence (GBV)
scourge.

This came as a 31-year-old man made a second appearance
in court following his alleged attack and torture of Yibanathi, his girlfriend,
with a hot iron leaving her with severe burn wounds on her head, arms, and chest.

According to Yibanathi, the attack occurred on March
26 after her boyfriend found a paper of a used condom and accused her of cheating on him.

Police spokesperson, Captain Siphokazi Mawisa, could not
be reached to confirm the charges the accused was facing as her phone rang
unanswered.

During Wednesdays’s court proceedings the accused was
denied bail and the case postponed to May 12 for a decision on date of trial at
the regional court where the case will be tried.
