GCUWA Vivians FC U/21 team, from Butterworth, were crowned as the new champions of the Mavuso “Scara” Malangeni annual soccer tournament, at the Msobomvu sportsground, over the weekend.
This follows after Gcuwa Vivians FC defeated the hosts of the event, FC Tshabalala, 1-0 in the final.
At the start of the final encounter, both teams displayed impressive football skills, connecting very well with their passes and attacking each other.
On form FC Tshabalala created numerous chances during the first half, but they failed to convert them, while Gcuwa Vivians FC had one opportunity and they scored their important winning goal.
In the second half, the hosts tried their best to find an equalising goal in aiming at taking the game into penalties, but Vivians FC defence was equal to the task, as the whole team were working together to defend and attack, and the score ended up 1-0 during regulation time.
In other results, Mzantsi United U/15 team defeated FC Tshabalala U/15 team 6-5 on penalties, after they drew 1-1 during regulation time.
The winning teams of the two age categories each won big trophies, soccer balls and medals. The runners-up went home with soccer balls and silver medals.
This tournament was hosted to celebrate and honour the late FC Tshabalala boss, Mavuso “Scara” Malangeni, who made a significant contribution in sports development in the Mnquma area.
Twenty soccer teams from different areas in Mnquma were part of the event and representatives of football structures from the Amathole region were in attendance during the games.
