“THE tournament is aimed at encouraging women to keep playing soccer; soccer is not about boys, as girls are also capable of playing soccer.”

These were the words of Anele Somagaca, who is the director of the Female World Foundation. Somagaca was speaking to Mthatha Express as they are finalising their preparations for the third annual tournament to be held on August 26 in Tsomo.

This year, only four teams are expected to participate. Pioneer Ladies’ FC, Future Stars FC, Khwezi Ladies’ FC and Vutha Ladies’ FC. Last year the tournament was won by Khwezi Ladies’ FC.

Somagaca said that the initiative is also to encourage parents to keep supporting young girls and create a space where youth can learn something that can change their lives. She said that in the near future she wants to see one of their players playing for Banyana Banyana.

All the participating teams will receive five training balls for each team and goalkeeping gloves.

The overall winner will go home with a trophy and gold medal.

The tournament is also part of celebrating women’s month, which is celebrated every year in August.
