Athini Nothi Mzingelwa has been rearrested after escaping with Siyabulela Khohliso from Ngqeleni Correctional Centre on April 27.
According to spokesperson for Department of Correctional Services, Singabakho Nxumalo, Khohliso is serving a 10 year sentence for rape while Mzingelwa is serving eight years for rape.
He confirmed that both escapees had been rearrested.
Khohliso was rearrested in Libode area and transferred to Mthatha Correctional Centre.
“Correctional Services National Commissioner Makgothi Thobokgale has applauded the assistance of community members who often provide the Department of Correctional Services (DSC) with useful leads during manhunt. Such was the case again in recapturing Mzingelwa,” said Nxumalo.
According to him, Thobokgale had announced the suspension of eight officials who were on duty on the day of the escape.
“Two additional officials have been issued with notice of suspension. The investigation is on going and more developments are expected to ensue,” said Nxumalo.
He added that the offender is back in the care of the Correctional Services and will join Khohliso as they are to face a new criminal charge for escaping from lawful custody.
