EIGHT girls’ teams booked their spot in the quarter-finals of the FNB Football Festival Tournament u/15. Sixteen schools participated in the elimination stages of this tournament last Friday, and the winners progressed to the quarter-finals.
The elimination for boys will be played this coming Friday, and the quarter-finals and finals for both girls and boys are expected to be played this Saturday and Sunday during the main event. Only schools are participating in this tournament.
The FNB coaches will select a squad of 40 players for both boys and girls, and later reduce the final squad to 20 players. The final squad for both girls and boys will travel to Gauteng in September to participate in the FNB National Championships.
One of the coaches, Vuyolwethu Mhlathi, said the scouting process had already started last week, and they are finalising it this coming weekend.
“For now, we will select 40 players from these schools, train them, and later select our final squad of 20 players that will represent us in the national championship in Gauteng on September 23.”
Mhlathi has thanked all the stakeholders, including King Sabata Dalindyebo Municipality, who assisted in ensuring that the tournament is a success. During the main event this coming weekend, delegations from KSD Municipality, the Veteran League, and FNB are expected to attend and deliver speeches to motivate the young players.
