Officials from the Department of Education’s Cluster A in Mthatha awarded its best performing schools for obtaining 76 percent in the 2022 matric results provincially, in a ceremony that was hosted at Khanyisa High School in Mthatha, last week.
According to the spokesperson for the Department of Education, Mali Mtima, these awards seek to encourage commitment towards improved quality of results in schools
He added that they were trying to motivate and encourage them because there are lot of challenges. According to Mtima, some of the teachers resign due to the challenges they face at work.
“Some of the challenges are caused by the behaviour of the teachers, learners and sometimes even parents. Those things result in some of them resigning and leaving, but those who are in the system and always working hard to ensure that we obtain a good percentage and goals should be appreciated.”
He confirmed that it was the first time they had hosted the event, which used to be done via districts. According to Mtima there are other platforms, including district awards to congratulate even the primary schools. He said that they are setting a legacy but will not manage to do everything at once, and as this initiative is growing, they will include other things. He also added that there are lot of things done by the department to ensure that they encourage these teachers.
“We are hosting different trainings so that they can get more knowledge because we are trying to show them that we acknowledge what they are doing.”
He encouraged those schools who are still struggling, to work together with their neighbouring schools who are performing better than they are.
