The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Eastern Cape Liquor Board (ECLB), Dr Nombuyiselo Makala, confirmed that they had handed over shoes and sanitary products to three schools recently.
She said that these three schools, Chief Henry Bokleni (CHB) Senior Secondary School in Libode, Sakhikamva High School in East London, and Mfesane Senior Secondary School in Gqeberha, are some of the schools where they have the Ambassador Programme.
These schools have learners who are ambassadors for the ECLB, who advise other learners to refrain from consuming alcohol.
“We decided to hand over these shoes because we understand their situation, so we said when we are doing our Back-to-School Campaign let us assist some of them, so that they can see that we care about them.
She said that children are the responsibility of the parents and the community, not the teachers only.
She also appealed to the liquor traders to stop selling alcohol to young children and not to allow them to come to their taverns and liquor stores.
One of the ambassadors of Chief Henry Bokleni Senior Secondary School, Anathi Bodlani (18), said they always advise learners to stay away from using alcohol because it destroys their future.
“If you are drinking alcohol you end up losing focus in what you want to be in life.
“You disrespect other people and even in the classroom you become a problem,” said Bodlani.
The chairperson for the School Governing Body (SGB) of Chief Henry Bokleni Senior Secondary School, Monwabisi Mtoniswa, said that they were happy to see that ECLB cares about them.
