The Eastern Cape Department of Transport is busy taking Scholar Transport operators through its new automated Scholar Transport Technology as the 2024 school year begins on Wednesday, January 17, 2024.

According to the Eastern Cape Department of Transport spokesperson, Unathi Binqose, the new known as the Leaner Transport Management System significantly improves the day-to-day running of the Scholar Transport System and helps eliminate possible human manipulation and human errors within the scholar transport service.

He added that the department believes this new system will catalyse a more efficient Scholar Transport Service going forward.

The new technology will help manage and monitor the end-to-end process of the Scholar Transport Programme to increase capacity to deliver accurate information, provide a coherent performance monitoring system and eliminate over and under-payments.

“The new system also seeks to address the internal control deficiencies around the Scholar Transport Programme, which has largely been the cause of the negative audit report from Audit General. Training of Scholar Transport operators on this new system is ongoing in districts across the province,” said Binqose.

The Eastern Cape Department of Transport MEC, Xolile Nqatha, has recommended the department for coming up with this technology-based solution to address the challenges facing the Scholar Transport Programme.

“Any intervention that seeks to improve this all-important service must be applauded. I am looking forward to its implementation and hope that the results will be as anticipated,” said Nqatha.
