Councillor Nkosomzi Nomnganga, of Umzimvubu Local Municipality, has been elected as the new Council Speaker for this municipality.

According to the Speaker, Nokhanyo Zembe, the election of the new Speaker took place during a Special Council Meeting held on Tuesday, August 1, in Kwa Bhaca.

According to her, the council proceedings for the election of the new Speaker were led by the Accounting Officer, Tobela Nota.

“The election of the Speaker was done in accordance with Chapter 3 of the Local Government Municipal Structures Act no.1998, which states that each Municipal Council must have a chairperson who will be called the Speaker,” said Zembe.

She added at its first sitting after the election, or when necessary to fill a vacancy, a Municipal Council must elect its Speaker from among the Councillors.

She added that the Municipal Manager of the municipality, or if the Municipal Manager is not available, a person designated by the MEC for local government in the province, presides over the election of a Speaker.

“Upon accepting his new role, he added that it would be daunting, but he was prepared for the journey ahead. He cited the importance of working together as a council to enable him to execute his duties diligently.”

The mayor of Umzimvubu Local Municipality, Councillor Zukiswa Ndevu, congratulated him on his new role as the Speaker of the Council. She reiterated her trust in his capabilities, given his experience in leadership positions.
