The Mnquma Local Municipality in Butterworth has remained committed to play a meaningful role in sports development in townships and rural areas.

This follows after Mnquma Municipality held a successful mayor’s cup where different sporting codes were part of the event.

Soccer, rugby, athletes, netball and horse racing, all these sporting codes, were part of the mayor’s cup which was hosted on Saturday, July 15, at Msobomvu sports grounds near Butterworth town.

During the prize presentation in the event, executive mayor, Manxila-Nkamisa, told players and parents who were in attendance that they are looking forward to keeping on playing an important role in the development of sport around Mnquma.

Manxila-Nkamisa said that by hosting the mayor’s cup annually, they wanted to make a meaningful contribution in sports development and also take the youth away from wrongdoings or something like drugs.

Furthermore, she emphasised the importance of young people to be part of sport so that they could use their talents to change their lives into a bright future.

Whenever the municipality hosted the mayor’s cup, the teams around Mnquma are always benefiting as they are getting sports equipment such as brand new kits, balls, medals, trophies and other things.

Even in the recent mayor’s cup, teams and players received individual awards and clubs got sports equipment just for reaching semi-finals.

The tournament is open to everyone who resides under Mnquma, as the elimination rounds of the event always start at the wards.

Then the teams who performed well throughout the elimination round, progressed to finals, which is staged at Msobomvu Sports Grounds every year where the big prizes are.
