In an attempt to attract potential investors to invest in Buffalo City, the Border-Kei Chamber of Business (BKCOB) and the Buffalo City Metro (BCM) embarked on a massive clean-up campaign throughout the month of September.
A few years ago, the BKCOB, in partnership with BCM, started a Call2Action campaign, a waste management and recycling initiative aimed at cleaning, preserving, and beautifying East London, including its beaches, the CBD, taxi ranks, and memorial sites.
Through its Call2Action campaign, the chamber started several recycling facilities and garden waste transfer stations throughout East London and surrounding areas, including the recently launched King Buyback Centre and garden waste transfer station in Qonce (formerly King William’s Town).
Buffalo City Metro, through its ‘Keep the City Clean’ drive, is hosting several clean-up and waste recycling awareness campaigns, starting with the oversight visit to the Berlin, Mdantsane, and Gonubie Roundhill landfill sites.
BCM’s Solid Waste and Environmental Management officials embarked on an oversight visit of major waste landfill sites as part of a drive to enforce accountability for projects undertaken during the 2023/24 financial year.
Speaking during the visit to Berlin, Solid Waste and Environmental Management HOD, Yoliswa Sinyanya, said the aim of the tour is to give an opportunity to the directorate’s committee and the public to have oversight on the projects that have been implemented during the 2023/24 financial year.
Solid Waste Services General Manager, Nomphelo Daniel, said they will continue with the clean-up initiatives, education, and awareness campaigns on waste handling and recycling as September is recognized as a national clean-up and recycling month.
In a single month, BCM receives about 4,000 tonnes of waste at its landfill sites, but this September, the Metro is promoting sustainability in communities by hosting these waste recycling awareness campaigns.
Several businesses affiliated with the BKCOB, including DNF Waste and Environmental Services, Current Consulting, and Tidy Towns Buffalo City, in partnership with the Institute of Waste Management South Africa (IWMSA), embarked on a massive clean-up campaign at the East London beachfront earlier this month. All proceeds from the campaign will be donated to the Guardians of Hope SA, a shelter for abandoned children situated in Belgravia.
