NGQUSHWA Local Municipality launched the Grade 12 Mathematics Manual (Parts 1 and 2), written by Mathematical Scientist and author, Aviwe Sofoyiya, at Ncumisa Kondlo Hall in Ngqushwa last week. This event was attended by various stakeholders, including officials from the Department of Education.

The Mayor of Ngqushwa Local Municipality, Councillor Sanga Maneli, confirmed that he will purchase 183 copies (both Part 1 and Part 2) of the manuals for students studying pure mathematics in the area. He expressed excitement about Sofoyiya’s achievement, stating that she is making a valuable contribution to the Eastern Cape and beyond.

“You will produce learners who will gain essential skills, and you have made things easier for them because they will no longer be afraid of mathematics. This will help improve the quality of education in the Eastern Cape. We are in a rural area, and the opportunities available here require people with talent — especially in mathematics — to contribute to the economy,” said Maneli.

Sofoyiya, from Gwalana Village in Ngqushwa, shared her journey, stating that she moved to Port Elizabeth in search of better opportunities to advance her career and education. She holds a qualification in Marine Studies from the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and an Advanced Diploma in Mathematical Sciences from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).

“Motivated by my lifelong passion for education, particularly in mathematics, I authored a Grade 12 Mathematics Practice Manual (Parts 1 & 2) to enhance learners’ understanding and performance in the subject. The manual serves as an essential tool to help students achieve top results, increasing their eligibility for tertiary education and financial aid opportunities.

“It was published by Evelyn 50 Publishing Company, based in Johannesburg. The manual was developed in 2023 and became available for purchase on July 11, 2024, at an affordable price of R400 for both parts,” she said.

She added that the manual is designed to simplify complex mathematical concepts, making them accessible to all learners, including those who struggle with the subject, while also fostering academic excellence and greater opportunities in the field of mathematics.

Sofoyiya identified a significant gap in how learners approach Mathematics. According to her, many students do not fail due to a lack of knowledge but because they struggle to understand the step-by-step process of solving mathematical problems.

“Often, learners memorise solutions to specific questions without grasping the underlying concepts. When faced with a different question on the same topic, they struggle because they do not fully understand the logical steps required to solve it. This manual was developed to address this challenge by providing clear, structured, and methodical problem-solving techniques.”

Since its publication, the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Sofoyiya shared that one of the most recent testimonials she received highlighted the effectiveness of the manual, reassuring her that it is making a meaningful difference in learners’ understanding of Mathematics.

She also revealed that she is currently working on another manual for Grade 10 learners. “I intend to expand this initiative by developing similar manuals for all grades. Mathematics education should be built on a strong foundation, and by addressing gaps at various levels, we can ensure better comprehension and performance in the subject.

The manual is divided into two parts: Part 1 focuses on Paper 1 concepts and includes practice questions, while Part 2 covers Paper 2 concepts in a step-by-step format. This structured approach gives me confidence that learners will achieve better results, and that the overall quality of Mathematics education will improve. By guiding students through logical problem-solving processes, we can help them develop a deeper understanding of the subject.”

Sofoyiya also mentioned that she uses her social media platforms to promote the manual. Additionally, many rural schools have become aware of it, particularly through teachers who actively engage on social media.

The accessibility of digital platforms has helped spread awareness about the book beyond urban areas.
