An alleged extortionist was fatally shot in a shoot-out with police in Centane on Thursday.

According to a media statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Siphokazi Mawisa, this occurred during a crime intelligence-driven operation with the assistance of members attached to the National Intervention Unit. They followed up on information about a person of interest allegedly involved in extortion.

According to the statement, it is alleged that the suspect was demanding protection fees from businesses in Centane CBD. When he was driving out of town, the members spotted the identified vehicle and tried to stop it. “He then stopped far away from the police and got out. He drew a firearm and started shooting at the police, who fought back,” the statement read.

The shoot-out led to the death of a 34-year-old male. No police member was injured during the incident. A firearm (9mm) with its serial number filed off, a bulletproof vest, and his vehicle were confiscated by the police.

A case of attempted murder and an inquest have been opened for investigation. The case will be transferred to the Independent Police Investigation Directorate (IPID) for further investigation.
